Biography

History from Find-A-Grave: "Jacob Haun was born in Pennsylvania to John and Molly Haun. His father is listed in the 1790 census at Plainfield, Towamensink, Northampton, Pennsylvania, and it is most likely here that Jacob was born in 1791. Jacob was married at the age of 25, on August 1, 1816 in St. Charles County, Missouri to Mary Moody, daughter of Joseph Grover Moody and Judith Creason. His younger brother Peter Haun would marry Mary's sister Jane Moody in St. Charles County two years later.

In 1824 Jacob was living in the Missouri River Valley of the American frontier when two optimistic German travelers named Gottfried Duden and Louis Eversmann, who were studying the possibilities of German settlement in the United States, were on a tour of the Missouri River Valley led by Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone. Duden and Eversmann broke off from Boone and headed further west and come to the home of Jacob Haun, near present day Dutzow, who offered to shelter and feed them until they could establish their own farms. In 1829 Duden published his findings back in Germany which soon became a best-seller and major German migration began.

Duden wrote: "I do not conceal the fact from you that the entire life of the inhabitants of these regions seemed to me like a dream at first. Even now, after I have had three months to examine conditions more closely, it seems to me almost a fantasy when I consider what nature offers man here."

Jacob and Mary had several children:

1. Wilson Haun (born 1817) 2. John Haun (1818-1849) 3. Malinda Haun (born 1820) 4. Harvey G. Haun (born 1825) 5. Nancy Jane Haun (born 1828) 6. Lydia Ann Haun Hudson (1830-1877) 7. Elizabeth Mary Haun (born 1833) 8. Martha Ann Haun (1833-1848) 9. James Haun (born 1835) 10. Sarah Elizabeth Haun (born 1837) 11. Melcena Haun (born 1840)

"The Founding Families of the University of Missouri. This information has been provided courtesy of the University of Missouri-Columbia and the Missouri State Archives. In early 1839 a contest was created between the central counties of Missouri to determine which county was to host the State University. To those farsighted pioneers of Boone County, we owe them a debt we can never repay. The following is a list of the 869 donors for this successful bid for the site of the state university. Where the amount is known to be over $100, it is listed. If multiple source information conflict, the alternative information is listed in NOTE: Crosthwaite, James was also on this same list. He might be related to Wilson Haun's first wife, Mary Ann Crosthwaite. Haun, Jacob Haun, Peter Haun, Wilson"
