Biography

Timeline

1853 Mary Hauser is born on 19 August in Indiana to George and Betsy (Fulk) Hauser. She went by "Polly" for most of her life.[1]

1863 The account of her parents' journey to Iowa to "check up on that side of the family" says that Henry -- who was 13 at the time -- was to stay behind in Owen County, Indiana with Betsy's brothers, Jake and Meeny, and put in the 1863 crops. Henry's sisters, Isabell and Marilda, were staying behind to work as "mother's helpers" for some neighbors. The rest of the children -- Hamm (2), Lydia Jane (4), George (6), and Mary ("Polly") (8), all went with their parents.[2]

1870 In 1870, we find Mary living with her widowed mother, Elizabeth, in Jefferson Township, Owen County, Indiana. There are several household members including Mary's siblings: Henry, Lydia, George and Isaac. There is also a 19-year-old Mary Hubbell and 64-year-old Rebecca Edwards.[3] It's not clear who Mary Hubbell and Rebecca Edwards are yet, but Mary's sister, Lydia, did marry Jacob Hubble.

1873 Mary marries Solomon Fiscus on 9 Nov 1873 in Owen County, Indiana. Unfortunately, neither set of parents is listed on this record.[4]

1880 Solomon (28) and Polly (26) are living in Jefferson Township, Owen County, Indiana. The household includes three daughters -- Marilda (5), Isabel (3) and an unnamed daughter (0) -- as well as Solomon's mother, Sarah (67).[5]

1900 Solomon and Polly are living in Franklin Township, Owen County, Indiana with their eight children: Miralda (26), Isabell (23), Amanda (21), Elias (18), Frank (16), Ollie (13), Delaney (7) and Alice (4). The census listing says that Mary is the mother if 9 children, only 8 living. They had a son, Eli, in 1890 who died at the age of 6.[6]

1910 Polly and Solomon have moved to Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois. Frank and Delana are living in the same household.[7]

1920 Polly and Solomon are now living in Somer Township, Champaign County. Frank and Delana continue to live with them[8]

1930 Polly and Solomon are now living in Champaign, Champaign County, Illinois. Their son, Elias, is also living with them.[9]

1945 Polly dies on 12 Feb in Champaign, Illinois. Her death record gives both her mother's and father's names: Elizabeth Fulk and "Geo" Hauser. It also gives "Solomon Fiscus" as her husband's name. She is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana, Illinois[10]
