Life

In early life Roger Foster Haviland was a farmer, but in the early '60's he went to Peekskill, N.Y., and became the first agent there for the American Express Co. Later he engaged in the grocery business. In 1867, he purchased (with his brother-inlaw, Willis Hoag Haviland, and George M. Ferris) the drug and general store of G.W. Sisson. The firm went under the name of Havilands & Ferris. In 1881, Willis Haviland retired, and the firm's name became Haviland & Ferris. They were among the leading drug houses of N.Y. State, dealing in all classes of drugs, patent medicines, paints, oils, sash and door blinds. In 1882 they added another store and kept a full line of builder's hardware and carpenter tools for both wholesale and retail trade. Roger is listed as Inspector of Elections of Glens Falls in 1861 and 1862; as Vestryman for the Church of the Messiah (Episcopal) in 1867, 1868, and 1885. [2]

Death & Burial

On Jan. 22, 1889 [2] [1] Roger Foster Haviland climbed up on his roof in Glens Falls, Warren County, NY to shovel away some snow, and he slipped and fell to the ground and died at age 50. [2] This story was remembered by Senator Willis Henry Haviland in a genealogical letter to Mrs. Mae Haviland (Roger's daughter-in-law, and mother of William Ford Haviland who compiled a more recent genealogy on the family): "Roger Haviland died the result of falling off the roof while pushing off the snow. At the time I was living in Minneapolis, Foster's mother telegraphed me, I left on the first train and arrived at Glens Falls in time for the funeral. After spending a few days, I left for home." [2]
Roger is buried at the Pineview Cemetery in Queensville, Warren County, NY, with a very large lot stone marking his family plot.[9] (His grave says that he died in 1899, which is an error -- his death certificate has him deceased at 1889.) [10] There are still three unused graves for future family in this plot. [11]

  5. In the 1850 census, Lydia Otis's second husband Solomon Haviland died by 1846 and she had remarried Henry Green in 1847. However it does not appear that Henry is living in the household yet in 1850.
