Biography

James was a Friend (Quaker)

"James Haviland, son of Gilber and Elizabeth (Downing) Haviland, b. Eastern, N.Y., 12 of 7 mo., 1748; d. there 21 of 8 mo., 1811; m. Martha- (?), b. 7 of 4 mo., 1754; d. Eastern, N.Y., 19 of 6 mo., 1810...

17 of 2 mo., 1787, James request removal certificate from the Oblong Friends Meeting, to Saratoga, for himself and family, three sons and four daughters." [1]

James Haviland is listed among the early settlers in the southeastern part of Providence, NY. [2]

"The Society of Friends, called Quakers, built two church building in Providence [Saratoga County, New York]...The members of the Society included Jabes and Alice Manchester, Joshua Boreman, Wing and Abigal Chase, Jonathan Westgate; James Haviland was the preacher for many years. The second building was built on a portion of his farm." [3]

His family was granted a certificate to the Galway monthly meeting on 25d 11m 1802 [25 Nov 1802].[4]
