Birth & Parents

Christopher Scott Haviland, son of Lane Allen Haviland & Donna Lee Sirmons, was born in 1965 in Lawrence, KS. [1] [2]

Christopher married 2000 in St. Petersburg, FL to Tzu Ching (Sara) Wu, daughter of Fang-Hsiung Wu & Yu-Feng Lin of Feng Yuan, Taichung County, Taiwan. [3]

Christopher's middle name was changed from Scott to Sirmons in 1983. [4]

I began genealogy research on the Haviland & de Havilland family around 1984, spending countless hours at the genealogy section at libraries ranging in size from the New York Public Library in NYC to various local libraries to LDS centers along the Eastern seaboard. I began trading GEDCOM data with a handful of other Haviland researchers in 1994, and uploaded research to some of the earliest genealogy sites online, even prior to the onset of -- such as Rootsweb (later taken over by Ancestry).

In 1995, a group of us set up the Haviland Genealogical Organization, which is now the Haviland - de Havilland Heritage Society ( Over the years, the organization has amassed a large amount of Haviland data, plus artifacts, original genealogy publications and heirlooms such as bibles and diaries, mailed to me by caring researchers who wanted to keep these things preserved and documented with the family.

I own three original bindings of Josephine C. Frost's Haviland Genealogy published in 1914, and one original binding of John V. S. de Havilland's version of the Chronicle de Havilland re-published in 1895.

Our researchers have conducted legwork on Guernsey (the earliest location where the de Havilland name can be genealogically traced), Normandy (the family is alleged to originate at a fief in Neustria, subject to the Merovingian and Carolingian Franks), England, Australia, Canada and the United States.

I currently co-manage the Haviland / de Havilland Y-DNA Study (, specializing in descendants of Thomas, Sieur de Haveilland, Jurat of Guernsey in 1470.

I have created and contributed to a number of articles at Wikipedia, and manage 330+ memorials at FindAGrave with 400+ photo contributions there. [5]

Ancestral and Collateral Relationships

Many thousands of Americans who can trace themselves back to Great Britain are descendants of Royalty and Mayflower Pilgrims, as well as other major common ancestors. In fact, just about everyone who has any English ancestry at all is descended from Emperor Charlemagne, as well as thousands of other people who were contemporary with him. What gives a researcher enjoyment is not finding out that they are descended from some royalty somewhere, but finding out how they are descended. It's always about how not if.

But how has two degrees of quality: 1) possible descent, which is usually what you find in and Geni and other family trees and pedigrees online, which are often loaded with mistakes and assumptions you don't know about; and 2) proven descent, which is a much more difficult goal and must have an array of primary evidence to support each generation's connection.

It's this journey that fascinates genealogy researchers and gives them a target in their hobby. The fact that they are all historic, well documented people makes them an easier genealogical target for a family tree. Most people in history are lost from genealogical record. Our sense of connection into the world community is intriguing to researchers.

While most of my relationships below (and my genealogy in general) were learned in the "olden" days when I had to use books in a library and microfiche in the LDS center, networks like WikiTree are making it much easier to find, prove and disprove various relationships. In my case, some of the royalty ancestral lines and all of the Mayflower lines are proven and documented. Some of the collateral relationships such as to Presidents has also been proven. Other relationships are only partially proven. --Chris Haviland

Of additional note is that King Louis XVI of France was a "de Havilland," at least from a chromosomal perspective. Genetic studies have proven that King Louis and the Haviland / de Havilland family are paternally both descended from an ancestor who lived about 10,000 years ago. Of course the genealogy is impossible to trace, and obviously the surname can't be traced that way, but figuratively speaking if the surname went back that far Louis XVI would be a de Havilland. [6]

The de Havilland surname is the officialized spelling of family surname from which I descend, although prior to the mid-1700s there was no such thing as an "official surname spelling." All of my de Havilland ancestors were armigerous bearers, meaning they had either been granted a Coat of Arms by a monarch, or they had inherited one according to the rules of Heraldry. And so they were not only literate but were more conscious about how the surname was spelled. (Note: it is improper to use a capi

The de Havilland family (my paternal lineage) traces back to the Jurats and Bailiffs of Guernsey in the 1400s.
My primary interest is the Genealogical, Heraldic and Y-DNA Study of the Descendants of Thomas, Sieur de Haveilland, Jurat of Guernsey 1474-1481, bearing over 9000 known individuals, on behalf of the Haviland - de Havilland Heritage Society ( This includes surnames Haviland, de Havilland, Heavilin, Heavilon, Havellande, Havelland, Haverland, Havilant, Avilant, and Abilant
A variant of de Havilland and Haviland.
I am proving descent from William Brewster, William Mullins / John Alden, and Richard Warren, for the purpose of joining the Society of Mayflower Descendants. I have ancestors who were prominent members but their research was lost in a fire. I am a member of the Alden Kindred of America. [1]
I am interested in research pertaining to the history of Neustria (the territory now called Normandy, but prior to the Norman invasion, subject to the Merovingian and Carolingian Franks). The Haviland / de Havilland family is alleged to have originated from a fief on the Cotentin called Abilant, with a fortress now extinct whose ruins or foundation I would like to discover.
There are various notables in my collateral family tree that I'd like to collect primary evidences for.

Many of the Havilands of New York in the 1600's and 1700's were in the Society of Friends, and a few were preachers.
My mother's surname is Sirmons, originally Sirmans, primarily a Georgia / Florida name, and I occasionally take interest in research on descendants of their earliest known ancestor, Edward Sirman(s) of North Carolina, as well as those families in England which Y-DNA evidence has proven kin to my mother's father but whose genealogical connection is unknown; which includes the names of Sirmons, Sirmans, Sirmon, Sirman, Sermon and Sermoner.

Hi Christopher--for the Man 118-Mann 937 merge, which last name do you want me to use? It looks like Mann may have the better documentation. Also, please give me the same advice for Havylond/Havilland. Thanks!

If possible, could you note the correct LNAB (last name at birth) on the merges with different last names?

Other profile information (like dates) can be chosen during the merge and should be noted in the request or on the profile, but we need to know the correct LNAB before merging.

Welcome to the DNA Project:

Please make sure each bit of DNA test information is added to the actual test participant's profile, not someone else's like your own. To make cousin connections, WikiTree needs to see the FamilyTree tab. Check that your Privacy on your profile is set to "Private with Public Family Tree" as a minimum. (Living minors should have an Unlisted privacy level.)

If you have not already done so, please set your preferences for your Tags Followed to include DNA and other terms of interest to you:
