Portland Man Will Wed New York Girl -- Charles Haviland And Miss Beulah Stivers To Be Married Friday

The engagement of Miss Beulah Stivers of Scarsdale, N.Y., to Charles Haviland of this city was announced recently at a Halloween costume party given in honor of Miss Stivers by Miss Elizabeth Howatt of Scarsdale. The affair was attended by friends of both young couple, the out-of-town guests including Carl Soule of this city.

Robert Daley, formerly a classmate of Mr. Haviland at Cornell University, devised a unique way of announcing the engagement. Quite in keeping with Halloween season, he "let the cat out of the bag," and produced very satisfactory results despite the cat being of paper and the bag a pillow case.

The wedding is to take place at 4:30 o'clock Friday afternoon in St. Paul's Church, Eastchester, N.Y., widely known as the oldest church within the precincts of New York City, having been founded in 1693, and with which Mr. Haviland's family has been associated for several generations.

Miss Stivers will have as her attendant, Miss Muriel Grimm of Harrison, N.Y., Robert Daley of New York City will attend the bridegroom. The bride will be given in marriage by her brother, Harlie Stivers, widely known illustrator for the Curtis Publishing Company, with whom she has made her home in Scarsdale and at whose home a wedding supper will be served the immediate families and a few close relatives. After a wedding tour, the bridal couple will make their home in White Plains, N.Y.

Miss Stivers was met by the younger set in Deering when she visited in Portland last Summer.

Mr. Haviland is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Foster L. Haviland of Pleasant Avenue. He was graduated from Deering High in 1922 and from Cornell in 1927, where he is a member of the Delta Phi Fraternity. He is at present with the Bell Telephone Company in Yonkers, N.Y. [2]

Charles and Beulah had one daughter, Patricia Alayne Haviland, who had Down's Syndrome. Charles allegedly caught Beula cheating with another man, and divorced her in 1937. Beulah moved to Chicago where she placed Patricia in a special home for the mentally handicapped. Beulah died in Chicago, Cook County, IL in 11 Jan 1945. Patricia lived for the rest of her life in a special home in East Hartford, CT and died there 5 Oct 1988. [3][4]

Charles married second on 12 Aug 1939 in White Plains, Westchester County, NY to Catherine Allen, daughter of Otis Smith Allen & Flora Bell Jones. Like Charles, she was directly descended from King Edward III. She was also descended from Mayflower Passengers John Alden, William Mullins, and William Brewster.
A newspaper announcement featured a photo of Charles and Catherine, under which read, "Mr. and Mrs. Charles V. Haviland, following their wedding at the home of Miss Elizabeth Howatt, 156 South Broadway, Saturday afternoon. The bride was Miss Catherine Allen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otis S. Allen, of Topeka, Kansas. Mr. Haviland, the son of Mrs. Foster Haviland, of Portland, Me., is a resident of this city [White Plains]. Reporter Photo."
The article read:

Miss Catherine Allen Weds Charles V. Haviland Here -- Ceremony Took Place Saturday Afternoon at Home of Miss Elizabeth Howatt, 156 So. Broadway

At a ceremony in the home of Miss Elizabeth Howatt, 156 South Broadway, Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Miss Catherine Allen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otis S. Allen of Topeka, Kansas, was married to Charles V. Haviland of this city, son of Mrs. Foster Haviland of Portland, Me.

The Rev. Henry K. Denlinger of the Presbyterian Church, Hartford, Conn., who married the bride's parents, performed the ceremony.

The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a powder blue ensemble with matching accessories. She carried pink roses. Mrs. Oliver K. Johnson of Topeka was her sister's maid of honor.

Donald C. Wilson of Scarsdale was best man.

A reception was held after the wedding in Miss Howatt's home. The couple will make their home at 44 Quarropas street, following a wedding trip.

Charles & Catherine had two sons, Lane Allen and Roger Otis. Catherine died of cancer on 12 Jun 1965, only a couple of weeks after the birth of Lane's first and only son, Christopher Haviland. [1]

Life

Charles was probably named after Charles Morgan Valentine, uncle of Foster’s mother, who lived with Foster’s family while he was growing up. Charles Morgan Valentine appears as “Charles A. Valentine” in the 1880 Federal Census, living at 56 years old with Roger Foster and Mary J. Haviland as a boarder. (Foster was 7 years old in that census, and Florence was 14). There is no doubt this is the same man, but it’s not certain why the middle initial is A (Charles Valentine’s sister’s middle initial, not his).
Charles Morgan Valentine died 4 years after Charles Valentine Haviland was born.
According to one of Charles Haviland’s I.D. cards when he worked for New York Telephone, he weighed 184 lbs and stood 6.0 ft tall.
