Haviland, age 65, first marriage, married 38 years, laborer for the city; wife Helen, age 59, first marriage, married 38 years, 3 children 2 living; son Parel [?], age 29, single, salesman for bicycles. All born in New York.[5]

1916, Jul 4. Death of Henry A. Haviland in Stamford Hospital, Stamford, Westchester County, Connecticut.. Henry was buried in the Long Ridge Union Cemetery (Lot 3, Section A, Grave 5) in Stamford.[6][7][8][10][13]

HAVILAND DEAD.
Expired in Stamford Hospital After a Paralytic Stroke. Henry A. Haviland of 160 Franklin Street, died yesterday afternoon, in the hospital, after a short illness. He was taken with a paralytic stroke on Saturday afternoon, and became unconscious. On Friday he was working, apparently in his usual good health. His health was considered good for a man of his years. Just previous to the stroke, he had complained of a headache.
He was in his seventy-second year, and spent about 43 years in Stamford. He formerly resided in Long Ridge, where his father kept what was known as the Haviland saw-mill, near Lockwood's corners. The son, Henry, worked here for a time, with his elder. During his life in Stamford, he had worked at various vocations, and was a general all-around man. He worked at one time as assistant janitor in the Elm Street school.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen; two sons, Levi, of Denver, and Ferris, of Stamford. Levi was formerly a letter-carrier here, and was later transferred to Denver. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Ella Cunningham, and two brothers, Frank and Alvey Haviland. He was born in Mamaroneck.
The funeral will be held on Friday, at 1:30 p. m., from his late residence. Interment will be in Woodland Avenue Cemetery. [Burial was actually in Long Ridge Union Cemetery.]

Died. Haviland--Tuesday, July 4, 1916.
Henry A. Haviland in the 72nd year of his age.
Funeral services will be held from his late residence, 160 Franklin St., on Friday afternoon, July 7, at 1:30. Interment at Long Ridge.[11]

Research Notes

  • The marriage entry in the Town of Stamford states Henry was born in Rye, New York. Sources after his death state he was born in Mamaroneck, New York. The 1850 Census has Henry living in Rye.
  • Was it our Henry A. Haviland who served 3 months as a Private in Company H of the 18th Regiment, New York National Guard? This regiment was ordered to Harrisburg, PA on 18 Jun 1863 and was mustered in the U.S. service for 30 days at Baltimore, MD on 8 Jul 1863. Served there and at Frederick, in the 2d Separate Brigade, Middle Department, 8th Corps, and was mustered out at New York city 15 Aug1863.
