Thomas Haviland, son of James Haviland & Anne Cobley, was possibly born ca 1778. Per descendant Dr. William Haviland:

Thomas and John D. were sons of James and Ann Cobley Haviland, James being described as a 'small squire.' John was born in Gundenham Manor, Somerset, so I suppose Thomas was, as well. Thomas had to be the older of the two, as he arrived in the U.S. (at Boston) in 1796. John was 4 years old at the time, so Thomas probably was not very old when he left England. One wonders, given the apparent disparity in ages, if there weren't other siblings born between Thomas and John. Alternatively, perhaps Ann Cobley was a second wife, an earlier one being Thomas' mother...

Thomas was a plasterer by trade, but his birth and death dates are unknown to me. His wife must have been English, for a son was born to them in August of the year they arrived in Boston. We have a punch bowl that they brought with them to the U.S., but nothing more that I know of.[1]
