Joseph Haviland, son of Stephen Haviland & __?__, might have been born ca 1736 in Freehold Monmouth County, NJ. [1]
Marriage
A license was issued 9 Aug 1779 in Freehold, NJ to marry Hannah Johnston. [1] Genealogist Josephine Frost wasn't sure this was the correct marital record and stated, "I believe his wife was Hannah Reed and that he was m. at a much later date and had at least one son named Amos, b. Feb 7, 1797, d. March 3, 1864; m. Phebe W. Craig, b. April, 1796, d. June 22, 1866, at Freehold." [1] However she does not cite her source or reasoning for that theory. As it stands, in 1779 Joseph would have been about 43 years old (guess) and Hannah 27, which is already very late for being married in those days, unless Hannah or both of them were previously married.
Children:
Josephine Frost suggested at least one son named Amos, born 1797 (see above quote), which would have made Joseph about 61 years old unless either his age of birth is not guessed correctly, or Amos is not his son. Frost was proposing Amos as a son based on her theory that Stephen Haviland married a one Hannah Reed much later (therefore she assumed Joseph was born later), so we think that is a different family unit.
The children of Joseph proposed below is the result of tentative research which we are still working to document. All of these children were born prior to the marriage of Joseph Haviland & Hannah Johnston. Of various explanations for this is that Joseph might have had an unknown wife prior to Hannah, since their marriage seems unusually late.
