Biography

Christopher Havilland appears in the Poole Parish Register marking his burial on 24 Jan 1589 to a father named James. [1]

John V.S. de Havilland in The Chronicle de Havilland believes this record to refer to a son of James de Havilland (son of James de Havilland & Helena de Beauvoir) & Juliana [de Sausmerez], but this James may be fictional or otherwise the parents confused with someone else.

In fact we know nothing about the person to whom this burial actually refers.

It has been proven that he is not one and the same as Christopher Havilland, Bailiff of Poole in 1553 and Mayor of Poole in 1569 as suggested by John von Sonntag de Havilland and entered into record at the College of Arms, for that Christopher was the son of James' brother John according to a certified entry in the Book of the Staple. (See the profile for Christopher Havilland for complete research and citations on that issue.)

Some genealogists have speculated that this burial is that of a child, because unlike other entries, it reads, "Mastr Christopher Havilland," which was a way to denote a young man or child. If that is the case, then he should be shown as the child of a more recent James than the suspected fictitious parent of this profile. This theory is not definitive, as "Master" in old England might also reference a prominent gentlemen. [2]
