Adelia Hawes was visiting in the home of her son, David Verner Hawthorne, in Collierville, Tennessee, when her dress accidentally caught fire. She died from injuries sustained in this accident and was buried in the DeLaunay family plot in the Magnolia Cemetery in Collierville, Shelby County, TN.
