Biography

Note: I disconnected Joseph Smith-963 as her husband. That Smith was apparently in Barnstable, and there is no source for the information. I think that Joseph Smith must have married a different Mary Hawes. Neither were uncommon names in early Massachusetts.

Birth

Mary Hawes, daughter of James Hawes and Damaris Bird, was born 25 Sep 1698 in Dorchester, Suffolk [Norfolk] County, Massachusetts.[1] Mary's surname was also recorded as "Haws" in a birth record[2]

In 1708 the family moved a few miles south to the Ponkapoaga Plantation. Here she married 16 May 1717 Joseph Smith,[3] who had also settled in that area of Dorchester.

In 1731 they moved a few miles further south to a farm at Dry Pond [Bay Rd at Plain St.], in that portion of Dorchester which became Stoughton in 1726 and was set off as Sharon MA in 1775.

She died in April of 1760.[4] Joseph died about ten years later.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

Hawes-1693 and Hawes-65 appear to represent the same person because: same dates and husband
