Note N12Family Life of the HawksHocks of madison County by Larry Hock
The settle ment of this area began in 1828. Other early arrivals (1829) included John Holmesley, his son Stephen and his sons-in-law John Austin (ho Cathrine Cynthia) and Michael Masters (ho Elizabeth). Michael, who later settled on Green Gipson's farm, died in 1831, and it was the first recorded death in the valley. Also arriving in 1829 were mary Ann Hock Johnson's step-sons Martin, Jr (only 16 years old), John C. and Pleasant M., who later served as the first sheriff of Madison County (1836-1846).
Early 1830 arrivals included Reuben Lollar, Green Gipson, Isaac Drake and Jacob Drake (father-in-law- of Lucinda Hock b. 1817). Jacob settled at the mouth of the creek which now bears his name. According to "Goodspeed's 1889 History of Northwest Arkansas", Green Gibson (their spelling) settled on Gibson's Creek. I'm sure it must have been in the Hock's Creek area, but I haven't been able to locate it on a current map. I have a copy of a hand-drawn map of the area (ca 1900) but it includes only Hock's and Drake's Creeks.
William Clark settled on Drake's creek in 1832. That same year Martin, Sr. and Mary Hock Johnson and the rest of his children moved to Madison County.
In 1833, mary and Martin Johnson and Elijah and Lucinda Hock Drake were listed among the first members of the Richland Church of Primitive Baptists, which met in a private home for 10 years. Church buildings built in 1843 and 1855 were probably co-located with Wesley Cemetery, burial place of Jesse Hock and many of our other ancestors. A nearby cave was given the name Baptist Cave due to all the baptizing that took place in that area of Richland Creek.
Jacob could have been born in Abingdon, Virginia or Sullivan Co. Tenn.
An 1830 Warren Co.c Tenn. deed of Oct. 4, Deed book 73-75 LDS Microfilm 972801 from heirs of Jacob Hawk to Martin Johnson lists legitimate heirs of Jacob Hawk.

Deed book A pg 477. 5 of Oct. 1816, 17 of Oct 1817 to 15 Jan. 1818. In 1828 Polly Johnson (Mary Hawk) member Rocky River Baptist Church, Warren Co. 4th Dist.
