Biography

Sampson was born on 24 July 1854 in Colvreath, Roche, Cornwall, England.[1][2]

In 1861 Sampson (age about 6) was living in High Coloureath, Roche, Cornwall, England. son, Scholar.

In 1871 Sampson (age about 16) was living in Coldvreath, Roche, Cornwall, England. Son, Farmers son.

When Sampson was about 32 he married Ellen Louisa Townsend in about 1887 in Orange, New South Wales, Australia. The couple had 4 children: Arthur S Hawke, Ruby May Hawke, Ernest Ray Hawke and Arthur Henry Hawke.[3]

LATE MR. SAMPSON HAWKE.
ORANGE, Thursday.
The death has occurred of Mr Sampson Hawke one of the districts most successful pioneers aged 76 years. Mr Hawke was bom at Colvreath, Roache, Cornwall and left there for New Zealand when l8 years of age subsequently coming to Orange in the late seventies on a visit to his brother the late Mr Thomas Hawke who was then settled at Colvreath orchard near Canobolas. Soon afterwards he returned to England but came back to Orange. He married Miss Ellen Favell of Pretty Plains near Lucknow and in 1890 they took up residence at Mount Pleasant where the first commercial crop of grapes was grown in the range district. Mr Hawke however specialised in cherry growing. Ten years ago Mr and Mrs Hawke removed to Orange. He leaves a widow, two sons, and one daughter. [6]
