Samuel was born about 1834[1][2]. He was baptised at St Mary Magdalene Church, Barwick, Somerset on 20 May 1832. His parents are listed as Ann and Samuel Hawker and his father's occupation is Labourer.[3]
The 1841 census lists Samuel Hawkes (wrongly transcribed?) as 8 years old living with his parents Samuel (40-44) and Ann (40-44) in the parish of Barwick, Yeovil, Somerset.[4] Also living in the household were his brother Richard (10) and sister Mary (6) and Sarah Bridgen (14).
Samuel Hawker married Jane King in Apr-June 1857 in Yeovil, Somerset.[5]
The 1871 census lists Samuel Hawker as the 37 year old head of the family living in Halewood, Lancashire with his wife Jane (33) and children: Florence (13), Sarah Ann (7), George (4) and Mary Jane (1). He is a Railway labourer born in Stafford, Somerset about 1834[1]. The birthplaces of the children show that the family travelled a lot with Samuel's work. In 1858 they were in Preston, Somerset (where his wife was born) and in 1864 were in Chowbent, Lancashire, 1867 Fenay Bridge, Yorkshire and 1870 Stalybridge, Cheshire, finally 1871 Halewood, Lancashire.
The 1891 census shows Samuel living at Higher Ogden, Lancashire. He was a waterman aged 58. Even though his marital status was given as married (not widower) his wife was not living there that night. She had passed away in 1883 in Rochdale. His children George (23), Mary Jane (21) and John (13) were living with him.[6]
The 1901 census, taken on 31 March 1901, shows Samuel Hawker as a 68 year old waterman waterworks who was born in Barwick, Somersetshire about1833. He is living in Milnrow, Lancashire with his 31 year old daughter Mary Jane and 23 year old son John who is also a waterman waterworks..[2]
The 1911 census lists Samuel Hawker living with his daughter Mary Jane and her husband Charles Robert Taylor at Milnrow, Codl Greave Newhey near Rochdale, Lancashire. He is 78 and still working as a waterman. This time he is listed as a widower.[7]
Samuel Hawker died in the Jan-Mar quarter 1922 in Rochdale, Lancashire. He was 89 years old.[8]
