Henry was born at Stoke St Mary, Somerset in October 1883 and baptised at the Church of St Mary in Stoke St Mary, Somerset. His birth was registered at Taunton. He is the son of Francis George Hawker, an Army Reservist and Elizabeth Ann Hawker.
Based on the baptism records of Henry and his siblings, between 1885 and 1886, Henry's father left the army and became a general labourer. He changed his name from Francis to Frederick but they remained in Stoke St Mary.
In 1891 Henry is living with his parents and siblings at Ruishton Somerset. His father has again changed his name, this time to Robert and is now working as a foreman at a paper mill. Henry is 7 and a scholar.
The 1901 Census of England places Henry, aged 18, at the Royal Naval Barracks, Keyham Devonport in the Seamen's Barracks, His later military records state he spent fourteen years and six months in the Royal Navy.
He arrived in Sydney on the Orsova on 07 Feb 1911, having boarded in Marseille. He is listed on the Ships Passenger list as a Lieutenant, Royal Navy.
Two years later, Henry married Elizabeth Sinclair in Drummoyne, a suburb of Sydney in July of 1913.
On 16 August 1914 he enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy but then on 10 April 1916, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force.
He was working as a caretaker at 19 O'Connell-street, city when he cut his hand on jagged glass. He likely developed an infection before the availability of antibiotics and passed away at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney in 1930. He was 47.
