In the 1911 census Burney was age 5 living at Northfield, Bournbrook, Worcestershire with his father Samuel Hawkes (44), mother Lizzie Hawkes (39), sisters Ada Hawkes (16), Elsie Hawkes (13), brothers Sammy Hawkes (11), Albert Hawkes (7), Tommy Hawkes (3), Herbert Hawkes (1)[2].

Bernard probably married. There was a marriage between a Bernard Hawkes and Lily Phillips in 1928 at Birmingham South[3].
