Joseph was born Aug. 6, 1839 in North Carolina. He married Martha Jane Groves on 2 Oct 1860 in Gaston, North Carolina and they had at least three children: James, Elisha, and Frances Lula.
Joseph enlisted as a Private in Company C, 10th Regiment N. C. State Troops (1st Regiment N. C. Artillery) Aug. 12, 1862 at Camp Hill, North Carolina. He was one of only 63 men remaining in the company at the end of the US Civil War. He was mustered out in April 1865 at the Appomattox Court House. Joseph died May 26, 1929 and is buried at the Sandy Plains Baptist Church Cemetery, in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina.
