Notes

Mrs. Jesse Johnson Reaches Age 82; Given Party on Sat. Patchogue Advance, 11 Sep 1947.

BROOKHAVEN—"First citizen of Brookhaven," a toast given by a neighbor, Andrew F. Myhr, was but one of the many glowing tributes showered on Mrs. Jesse Johnson Saturday afternoon at her home on Beaver Dam road where a host of relatives, friends and neighbors gathered for a surprise reception to honor her on her eighty-second birthday.

Mrs. Johnson herself greeted all the guests as they arrived, ushered them into the dining room where they were served cake and punch from a table done all in pink for the occasion, then showed them into the living room where her many gifts were spread in array and where piano and table tops were gay with cards bearing messages of congratulations.

Born in Brookhaven, the daughter of Herman Hawkins and Harriet Hulse Hawkins, and a granddaughter of the Rose family, Mrs. Johnson is a descendant of three families who are listed among the earliest settlers in Suffolk county, and has lived in Brookhaven all her life. She taught school here many years ago before her marriage in 1894 to Jesse Johnson, the young man who had come to Brookhaven two years before to be principal of the school. With him she gave long years of active service to the Methodist church, the School board, the Red Cross and many other community projects until his death in 1945 forced her to carry on her work alone. A record breaker also, Mrs. Johnson held the post of treasurer in the Fireplace Literary club for 26 years.

Generosity and activity have always characterized her way of living, and today, as warm and eager and charming as ever, she will tell you with modest pride that she still drives her own car and still deems it a privilege to answer a knock at her own front door.

Those of her family and friends who attended Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. Norman Russell, Jamaica; Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Hawkins, Southampton; Douglas Hawkins and son Philip, Manhattan; Mr. and Mrs. John O'Connell, Brooklyn; and from Brookhaven, the Misses Elizabeth and Ella Hawkins, Jesse Hawkins, Mrs. Jane Lightbody, Mrs. Florence Gwynne, Mrs. Isabel Johnston, Mrs. Mark Briney, Miss Francis W.
