Charles was born in 1847 in Biggin or Church Fenton, Yorkshire, England, where he lived with his parents, George Hawkin and Elizabeth Baker, in 1851[1] and 1861.[2]
At the time of the 1871 census, Charles boarded with the Richardson family while he worked as an agricultural labourer in Eastrington, Yorkshire.[3]
In 1873 he married Annie Hewson in Aughton.[4][5] She died in 1880 at the age of 32.[6] In 1881 Charles and his son George lived with Ann's parents, John and Mary Hewson, in Ellerton, Yorkshire. Charles worked as a teazle labourer.[7]
In 1891 he worked as a pit labourer, boarding with the Nicholson family in Allerton Bywater, Yorkshire.[8] Charles was a colliery platelayer in 1901, when he lived in Featherstone, Yorkshire.[9]
