Biography

Nancy Ann Hawkins was born on 19 February 1844 in Peoria, Illinois. She was the daughter of Benjamin Bowman Hawkins (1813-1885) of Guernsey, Ohio and Elizabeth Ann Walker (1821-1906) of Coshocton, Ohio. She bears the name of her maternal grandmother.

She married Sylvester Alpaugh in about 1863 in California. He was born 23 January 1826 in New York.

1870 dated June Residence Bodega township of Sonoma county, California with brother and his family in his household.^[3] Record shows Nancy and her two children, Eddy and Emmily, but not Sylvester.
1870 dated August Residence Shasta county of California with her brother and his family living next door.^[4] Record shows Nancy, Sylvester, Eugene E (Eddy) and Eva E (Emily). In both the June and August census, her grandmother, Nancy Ann Halsey, and her first cousin, Emma Hicks, are living either in her families household or next door. It must have been very special to have shared the last few years of her grandmother's life with her. Being named after her and hearing stories all of her life, but being a continent away until Grandma Nancy Ann traveled from Ohio to California.

Her father, Benjamin, died in 1885. Her husband, Sylvester, died on 31 December 1897 in Milleville. They had been married about 34 years. Three years later, in 1900, Nancy Ann was living in Round Mountain township with three children at home; Linnie, May and Sylvester, Jr.^[6] That record states that she was born in Iowa and was the mother of eight children, with eight living. Her mother, Elizabeth, died in 1906.

Nancy Ann died on 16 November 1909 in Millville. Her burial was under the name "Mrs. Sylvester Alpaugh" in the Millville Masonic Cemetery, next to her husband.^[7] The memorial says she was a native of Iowa, which agrees with the 1900 US Census, however the census from 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 all state that she was born in Illinois. Her parents were married in 1842, as well as her brother, born 1843, both events in Peoria, Illinois.
