Jane was born in 1856 in Scotland to John Hawkins and Agnes Steward. She was married to Nate Middleton in Hamilton County, Iowa in 1887.[1]. Her life story is somewhat of a mystery, as the 1900 census states that she came to the US from Scotland in 1857. [2] and it also states that she is the mother of 6, all living. But only one child is living at this address: Chester H Middleton, the son of this couple. There is another Jane married to a Walter Hay living in the area in 1880, and she does have 5 children, but I have no way of determining if these two are one in the same.
Only one child was born to this couple, and her husband passed just three years later, in 1903. She then remarried a man named William Clark, and in 1910 she can be seen living with him and her son Chester. [3]. This census also states that she is the mother of six living children, but only the one is living with her.
Her husband was considerably older than she, and he passed prior to the 1920 census where Jane can be found living with her son, Chester. She has taken back the name Middleton.[4] She passed in 1925 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Webster City with a beautiful tribute engraved upon her gravestone. [5]. There is no mention made of any other children.
