Biography

Henry William Hawkins married Elizabeth Bethany Caroline Cockrum 1818–1880 in 1838. Their children are:

Filed a claim in 4 Dec 1876 with U.S. Southern Claims Commission, Allowed Claims, 1871-188? for a claim from the US Government that he was due for $1548 in damage to his animals and crops because he was a Union sympathizer when Union troops invaded Cherokee County, AL in 1864. He was awarded one half of his claim resulting in an award $774 from the US Congress. (4) U.S., Southern Claims Commission Allowed Claims, 1871-1880, Alabama, Cherokee County. Submitted to US Congress 4 December, 1876. by Commissioner of Claims, Under Act March 3rd, 1971. Justice E. McCarthy, Washington. ^[1]

The US Census of 1870 said that W.H. Hawkins was illiterate along with most of his neighbors.^[2]

From 1862 Hawkins worked at Round Mound iron works, Cedar Bluff, Alabama pouring cast iron ingots. The cast iron was sent to Rome, Georgia to be remelted and poured in molds to make Confederate States of America cannon. 15% of CSA iron ore came from Cherokee County, Alabama during the US Civil War.

William H Hawkins is buried Tuckers Chapel Cemetery, Cherokee County, Alabama.^[3] Inscription "Gone but Not Forgotten"
