Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Tap Hawkins is a part of US Black heritage.

Tapley "Tap" Fowler Hawkins was born about 1857[1] in Stokes County, North Carolina, United States of America. He was the son of Patrick Hawkins and Vina Hawkins[2][3] He was born enslaved by Joel Hawkins. His mother was the cook on the plantation. After the American Civil War, his family stayed on Joel Hawkins's land and sharecropped tobacco and corn.[2] In 1870 and 1880, they were enumerated in the census in Snow Creek Township, Stokes County, North Carolina. Tap's father Patrick died between 1870 and 1880.[1][4]

Tap married widow Susan (Payne) Kennely on 10 Nov 1881.[3] With their marriage, he became the stepfather of her daughter, Anna (Kennely) Darke. In 1900 Tap and Susan lived in Winston, Forsyth County, North Carolina with their teenage niece and nephew, Julia and Willie Tatum.[5] Soon after, they moved to Springfield, Clark County, Ohio, where they lived for the rest of their lives. They lived at 809 Dibert Ave. Tap was a painter at The Champion Co. plant.[2][6][7]

Tap and his wife Susie were both interviewed by the Federal Writer's Project of the Works Progress Administration, most likely in 1937 or 1938, about their lives during slavery. At the time they were living at 809 Dibert Ave in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio.[2][8] The project took a photograph of the couple at the time, which is available through the Ohio History Connection.

Tap died on 1 Aug 1940 at his home in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio.[7]
