John lived at Tavistock and married Joan, the daughter and heiress of William Amadas, Esquire, of Launceston, who was Sergeant-at-Arms to Henry VIII. William married Margaret Hawkins, but it is not known how she was related to John. It seems possible that this marriage led to the introduction of the Hawkins family to the court of Henry VIII . . . He and Joan had three children: William, Henry and Agnes.[1]
