William was baptised at Witney parish church on 10 February 1828, as the son of James (a tailor) and Hannah Hawkins, of Witney [1].

In 1841 William Hawkins was living at Curbridge in Oxfordshire with Sarah Arnold (a widow), Hannah Hawkins (who is presumably his mother) and Hannah's other children. His age was given as 13, implying a birth date in 1827 or 1828 [2].

In 1851 William Hawkins was living at Curbridge with his step-father Joseph Wood, mother Hannah Wood, and Hannah's other children from her first marriage. His age was given as 23, implying a birth date in 1827 or 1828. His birthplace was given as Witney, Oxfordshire. He was an agricultural labourer [3].

William Hawkins, an engineer, of Tipton, Staffordshire, son of James Hawkins (deceased), tailor; and Eliza Smith, of Curbridge, daughter of William Smith, labourer; were married at the parish church of Witney on 24 December 1854 [4].

In 1871 William Hawkins was living at 22 Bank Street in Coseley (in the parish of Sedgley) in Staffordshire with his wife Eliza and their children.
