Marriage & Family

The marriage of John Spicer and Juliathea Hawkins is recorded in the St. James Parish register 10 NOV 1709.[1] Juliathea began her married life in Anne Arundel County and then moved with her husband to the area where the city of Baltimore would soon be founded. She was the mother of at least eight children who lived to adulthood.

Juliatha's husband, John Spicer of Baltimore County signed his will on 6 January 1738/39. He left bequests to Juliatha and their children, making special provision for their four youngest daughters. John's will was proved on 7 March 1739.[2] His bequests were:

to son Thomas Spicer – part of tract called “Spicer’s Inheritance” lying on north side of great Glaid(?) branch
to wife Juliatha Spicer – part of tract called “Spicer’s Inheritance” lying on south side of great Glaid(?) branch, which includes John’s dwelling plantation
son, Edward Spicer – Juliatha’s portion of “Spicer’s Inheritance” after her death or remarriage.
daughter Juliatha Spicer – Edward Spicer’s portion of “Spicer’s Inheritance” if Edward Spicer dies without heirs.
daughter Ann Spicer – daughter Juliatha’s portion of “Spicer’s Inheritance” should Juliatha die without heirs
daughter Susanna Spicer – Ann Spicer’s portion of “Spicer’s Inheritance” should Ann die without heirs
Executor: wife Juliatha Spicer.
”And in as much as I have now four Daughters under age, some of them very small, who will be chargeable to my dear Wife to bring up, My will therefore is that my sd. Wife have full Power to sell my Tract of Land called the Fancy containing 50 acres lying near Saker(?) Hill in Baltimore County [to support] my daughters to wit Susana Ann Elizabeth & Juliatha Spicer…”
daughter, Sarah Hanson – one shilling sterling
daughter Dinah Hall – one shilling sterling
”My son Edward Spicer & my son-in-law Jonathan Hanson to be Trustees”

Juliathea lived as widow for at least three years after the death of her husband. On 9 NOV 1742 she recorded a gift of furniture to her granddaughter, Mary Spicer, the daughter of Diana Spicer, the now wife of Joshua Hall. [3] The wording of the deed gives no indication of the father of Mary Spicer.
