Joshua Hawkins married Susannah "Sukey" Johnson march 29, 1782 in Lunenburg County Virginia.[3]
In November 1791 he petitioned the Virginia House of Delegates for more time to make application for his pay for two years service. The claim office records showed that he had not yet received payment. In 1813 he was awarded three dollars per month Invalid pay beginning in March 1808.
He applied for pension in 1821 and he was awarded eight dollars per annum beginning August 1818. In July 1844 hIs widow "Susan" applied for benefits and was awarded eighty dollars per annum.
24 August 1818 That he Joshua Hawkins enlisted as a private in the Continental service in the spring of the year 1776 (in March 1776) in Captain James Johnson's Company, [4] 6th Regiment of the Virginia line, commanded by Colonel Mordecai Buckner, of General Wedons [George Weedon's] Brigade, in General Green's division; and that he remained in the Service till the Battle of Brandywine [September 11, 1777] where he was severely wounded and taken prisoner and remained a prisoner until the 19 February 1778 when he was discharged (in consequence of being severely wounded) on his parole. That he was then a resident of Lunenburg County, State of Virginia, and removed from thence to Spartanburg District aforesaid in South Carolina aforesaid in the year 1782 & has continued to reside therein ever since. That he is in reduced Circumstances & requires the assistance of his Country for his Support.
[Facts in file: Veteran was allowed a pension of $3 per month, on account of his wound, commencing March 25, 1808 which he relinquished when he applied for his pension under the 1818 act. That the widow's maiden name was Susan Johnson; that the marriage took place either in the early part of 1780 or on March 29, 1782 (both dates contained in documents in the file).].

any manner whatever disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to
diminish it as to bring myself within the provision of an act of Congress entitled “an act to
provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the
revolutionary war” passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not nor has any person
in trust for me any property, or securities, contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income
other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed

[p 10: On July 2, 1844 in Spartanburg District South Carolina, Sarah Hawkins, 84, filed for a widow's pension under the 1838 Act stating that she is the widow of Joshua Hawkins, a revolutionary war pensioner; that she married him in Lunenburg County Virginia early in the year 1780; that they were married by the Reverend James Shelbin; that she cannot remember the month or day on which she was married; that her husband died July 25, 1832; that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but was married to him prior to January one, 1794, at the date above stated. She signed her application with her mark.].[5]

Revolutionary War Rolls Captain James Johnsons Company, Virginia lists him as Corporal. Probably error. Ditto was used as rank for several following after a Corporal was listed. Joshua stated his rank as private.
