Thomas Hawkins, the oldest member of the West Virginia legislature, died today at Huntington, W. Va., aged seventy-four years. "The Evening Star," Washington D. C. Monday Sept. 28, 1896

Although many family trees have given him the middle name of Jefferson, I have never seen him have a middle name in any record, not even a middle initial. There is a record of a Thomas Jefferson Hawkins who joined the Confederacy in Farmville, Virginia in 1863, but I am most certain it is not this Thomas Hawkins. Thomas and family are listed in the 1860 Putnam County, WV census, their P.O. was Hurricane Bridge. Thomas' son William B. was born in Putnam County in 1860, so why would he go all the way to Farmville, over the mountains, to join the Confederacy?
