Martha Hawkins was born in Rosedale, Iberville Parish, Louisiana in 1888[1] to Jackson Hawkins and his second wife, Mary J. Randolph. Her father was one of 272 enslaved people that were sold by Georgetown University in 1838,[2] many of whom arrived in New Orleans 13 November 1838, as did he, with his family, before relocating to Iberville Parish, Louisiana. He was then two years old.[3][4]

She married Thomas A. Sanders in Louisiana in 1910.

In 1923 she [may have] married Samuel David Arbuckle in Iberville Parish, Louisiana.

In 1940 she was counted on the census in her younger brother Abraham Hawkins' household in Iberville Parish, Louisiana, with four sons and possibly a daughter.[5]

Martha Hawkins died in Rosedale, Louisiana in 1968,[1] and was buried at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery in Maringouin, Iberville Parish, Louisiana.[6]
