Gene was born in 1927. She was the daughter of Jessie T. Hawkins and Janie Strange. She passed away in 2014 and is buried in Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery, Bishopville, Lee County, S.C.

Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Jesse T. Hawkins and the late Janie Strange Hawkins. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and retired as a nurse from the Lee County School system.
Survivors include: three sons; two grandchildren; and a sister.
