NAME: His first name is variously spelled in records as Merrill, Merl, Murill. The most common is Merrill, used here.

Merrill was born about 1825, NY. (Possibly Cooperstown)

First wife: Mary Wiley, d. 1853

Second Wife: Almira/Alvira/Elmira Tryon born ca. 1836. Children specify her origin NY or CT, but censuses say PA or NY

Almira Hawkins d 1 May 1907 b 6 Aug 1836 PA see https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/146351293; daughter mentioned is Ellen Hawkins Lick. Many Hawkins graves in that cemetery, possibly including Merrill's first wife Mary d 1853.

C. A. Tryon, female, aged 14 (b abt 1836 PA) appears in the 1850 census in the family of Timothy Tryon in Washington, Erie, PA. Right sex, right age, right place. If her first initial is C but she only ever used the name Almira, this may be why we cannot find a marriage record. Death record for Almira Hawkins specifies birth place as Washington, PA, and father as T. Tryon.

Merrill may be the son of G. W. (George Washington) Hawkins b abt 1779 RI, who is living nearby in the 1850 census with other Hawkinses, most of whom are buried in the same cemetery as Almira Hawkins and possible other children of hers and Merrill's. Nicely, his occupation is described as "old gentleman".
