Athold was born in 1895. He is the son of Edward Hawkins and Barbara McDonald. In 1915 aged 20 and a station hand in Walgett Athol joined the AIF and 20 Dec 1915 destined for Egypt, he was transferred to the 2nd light horse brigade, in March 1916 transferred to the as a gunner to the 39th field battery of the 10th field artillery. On june 1916 joined the British engagement for in France at Marseilles destined for the western front. 1917 after serving on the French battlefields he is appointed driver before returning to Australia 11 June on the ship China... Althold received the 3 war medals.
