Biography

OBITUARY: Robert Elmo Hawkins, 92, of Houston, was born on February 16, 1923 in New Waverly, Texas, the son of Clarence Hawkins Sr. and Jannie (Walker) Hawkins. He married Doris Jo "D.J." Smith on November 1, 1942.

He was a retired elevator inspector and a member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local #31. He was also a member of the Mason Lodge #1295, the Elk Lodge #672, the Moose Lodge #1721, the American Legion Post 521 and the VFW Post 8790.

He enjoyed boating, traveling especially to Coushatta and Las Vegas with family and friends, dancing, collecting coins and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Robert passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2015 at the Cornerstone Hospital of Round Rock.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his daughter, Robbie Jo Comer; his granddaughter, Kelly; his grandson, Richard; his sister, Maxine Rhodes and his brother, Clarence Hawkins Jr.

Robert is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mike & Phyllis Hawkins of Lexington; four grandchildren, Sharlene Black of Oregon; Michael Hawkins Jr. of Lexington, Robert Hawkins & Diana Johnson of Rockdale and Candice Weiser & her husband, Travis of Lexington; nine great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild; one sister, Cootsie Rhodes & her husband, Fred of Tanglewood; sister-in-law, Betty Joe Smith of Houston; his close friend, Peggy Fowler of Deer Park as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings with Pastor Ronnie Richter officiating. Burial will follow in the Hugh Wilson Cemetery in Tanglewood, Texas. Visitation will be held at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings.

Serving as pallbearers will be Butch Hawkins, Brian Mahr, Marlon Lankford, Michael Hawkins Jr., Bob Moore and Bill Spivey.

Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the charity of one's choice.
