He died in Mars Hill, Aroostook County, Maine. [2]

Notes

According to affidavits in his son Samuel Hawksley's pension file, John's leg was struck by a falling tree in September 1861. His leg was broken just below the knee and the fracture was never set, as they had no money to pay a doctor. As a result, John was lame after he healed, always walked with a cane, and they relied upon their son Samuel to do all the work in the family's home and on the land, until Samuel was killed in the Civil War.[4]

John was a member of the Calvinist Baptist Church in Hodgdon.[5]
