Biography

Elizabeth Hawley was born on 26 January 1651 in Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut Colony.[1][2] Her parents were Joseph and Katherine Hawley.

This Elizabeth is not to be confused with Elizabeth Hawley, the sister of Joseph, who married Richard Booth about 1640, in Stratford. See for example:[3]

On June 7, 1670 at Stratford, she married John Chapman of Say-Brook, Connecticut,[4]the oldest son of Robert Chapman the first settler who came from Hull in England to Boston in August, 1635.[3][1]

John and Elizabeth had three children

  1. John was born April 24, 1671 at Say-Brook. He died young.[3]
  2. Joseph was born July 1673 at Say-Brook. He married a woman named Sarah.[3]or Susan[1]Six children were born to the couple.[3] He resided in the town of Say-Brook. He died in 1732[3] or 1752[1]
  3. Elizabeth was born February 10, 1675/6 at Say-Brook. She married Stephen Chalker of Say-Brook on June 3, 1703.[3] Stephen was the son of Samuel Chalker and his wife Phebe (Bull) Chalker.[1]Six children were born to the couple. She died June 27, 1676.

Death

Elizabeth (Hawley) Chapman died May 10, 1676.[1]

On March 26, 1677 John Chapman married Elizabeth Beaman at Saybrook, Connecticut.[4]

Hartford, Connecticut Probate Records, 1700-1729 Page 162 An agreement, made among the heirs of Capt. John Chapman, late of Haddam, decd.: Know all men by these presents: That we, Joseph Chapman of Saybrook in the County of New London, and David Chapman of Haddam in the County of Hartford, and Samuel Chapman of the aforesd. Haddam, the only natural sons of now surviving of Capt. John Chapman, late of Haddam, decd., and Stephen Chalker of Saybrook and Joseph Selden of Lyme, in the County of sd. New London, and Lemuel Richardson of Stonington in the County of New London, sons-in-law of the abovesd. Capt. John Chapman, decd. (by affinity of his three daughters, Elizabeth, Anne and Mehetabell Chapman), and Lydia Chapman of Haddam, do hereby declare that for as much as it hath pleased Almighty God in his holy providence to take from us our aged and honorable father, Capt. John Chapman, decd., and left behind him a considerable estate in lands, goods and chattels, to be disposed of, all his just and lawful debts being hereby secured to be paid, we whose names are above written being the true and lawful heirs to all and every part of sd. estate, both real and personal, do hereby, for ourselves, our heirs and successors, mutually and firmly agree to the dist. of or dividing the whole sd. inheritance. Moreover, it is hereby agreed upon that Jabez Chapman, with the approbation of the Honoured Court of Probate, is chosen to administer on sd. estate and to pay all the just and lawful debts due from the sd. estate out of his own part of the estate, the rest of the heirs to be freed from all entanglements whatsoever. Witnesses: William Spencer and Alexander Spencer. Court Record, Page 68, April 8, 1712: An agreement of the children of Capt. John Chapman, late of Haddam, decd., for a division of the estate, was not exhibited in Court by Joseph Chapman, Jabez and Samuel Chapman, sons of the deceased, and Stephen Chalker and Lemuel Richardson, sons-in-law. These appeared in Court and acknowledged this to be their free act and deed.[5]
