Birth
John Hawthorne was born on 1 May 1866 in Ballybunden townland, parish of Kilmood, County Down, Ireland. His father was James Hawthorne and his mother was Sarah Jennings. His birth was registered in the Newtownards registration district.

Marriage
On 13 August 1892, John Hawthorne, a full age bachelor labourer from Crossgar, married Ellen Simpson, a full age spinster, also from Crossgar. They were married in the First Presbyterian Church of Saintfield, in the Parish of Saintfield, County Down. Ellen's father was listed as David Simpson, a blacksmith. John's father was James Hawthorn, a labourer. Their witnesses were George Simpson and Agnes Hawthorn. Their marriage was registered in the Lisburn registration district. [4]

In the 1901 Ireland Census, John , age 32, was living in Killinchy in the Woods Townland in the parish of Killyleagh near Crossgar, County Down. He was with his wife and two sons. John was working as a farm labourer. [7]

Widower
John's wife Ellen died from phthisis pulmonalis (tuberculosis) on 10 November 1906. She was living in Magheracranmoney Townland in the Parish of Inch at the time of her death. John was the witness on her death record. Ellen's death was registered in the Downpatrick registration district. [8]
In the 1911 Ireland Census, John, age 43, was living in Dunnanelly townland in the parish of Inch in County Down. He was with his two sons. He was working as an agricultural labourer. [9]

Second marriage
On 1 January 1914, John Hawthorn, a full age widower and labourer from Dunnanelly, Inch, married Charlotte Hill, a full age spinster from Turmennan. They were married in the First Presbyterian Church of Saintfield, in the Parish of Saintfield, County Down. John's father was listed as James Hawthorn, a labourer. Charlotte's father was listed as John Hill, a labourer. Their witnesses were James Hawthorn and Edith Violet Jennings. Their marriage was registered in the Lisburn registration district. [10]
Widower again
John's wife Charlotte died on 10 March 1951 in Dunnanelly, Downpatrick, County Down. Her step-son, John Hawthorne, was the informant on her death record.
Death
John died on 3 June 1955 in Dunnanelly, Downpatrick, County Down. His son, John Hawthorne, was the informant on his death record. His cause of death was listed as "probably heart failure." No medical attendant was present. [11]
