Ellen was born in 1849 in Mullaghdoo, Islandmagee, County Antrim, Ireland, the daughter of Arthur Hawthorn and Isabella Hill. She was baptised on 31-Aug-1849 in 1st Islandmagee Presbyterian Church.[1]
In 1875 she married a mariner, Samuel Brown, in 1st Islandmagee Presbyterian Church. She is recorded as now living in Mullaghboy, Islandmagee. The witnesses were James Hawthorn and Agnes Brown.[2]
In 1901 and 1911 Ellen Jane is living with her husband and some of her family in Mullaghdoo, Islandmagee.[3][4]
Ellen passed away on February 18th, 1945 aged 95 years. [5] She left a will, and administration was granted to Sarah Browne, spinster. [6] She is interred in the Browne Family Plot in Ballykeel Graveyard, Islandmagee. [7]

Erected by Ellen Jane Browne in memory of her beloved husband Samuel Browne who died 29th December 1912, aged 62 years. Also their daughter Nellie who died 22nd December 1905, aged 26 years. Their son Samuel, who died in Infancy. And their son John Hill, who died at Brisbane Australia 12th January 1938 aged 43 years. The above named Ellen Jane Browne died 18th Feb. 1945 in her 96th year. Her daughters Agnes died 25th December 1972 aged 83 years and Elizabeth Mary died 5th August 1974 aged 82 years. And Sarah, wife of A.W. Kane, died 20th June 1985 aged 94 years.
