William Hay, 1st Earl of Erroll was the son of Gilbert of the Haye and Alice Hay.[1]

Earl of Erroll is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1453 for Sir William Hay. The subsidiary titles held by the Earl of Erroll are Lord Hay (created 1449) and Lord Slains (1452), both in the Peerage of Scotland. The Earls of Erroll also hold the hereditary office of Lord High Constable of Scotland. The office was once associated with great power. The Earls of Erroll hold the hereditary title of Chief of Clan Hay.

He held the office of Hereditary Constable of Scotland.

He succeeded to the title of 1st Lord Hay in 1450.He was created 1st Earl of Erroll on 12 June 1452.On 31 July 1452 he gained the territorial Earldom of Erroll and Lordship of Slains by charter.

He married Lady Beatrix Douglas, daughter of James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas and Beatrice Sinclair, circa 17 March 1449/50.[2][3] They had issue:

WilliM died after 15 November 1461 - probably in Oct 1462.[2]

Hay-1536 and Hay-306 appear to represent the same person because: It seems that Hay-1536 has been created as a duplicate of Hay-306. They are clearly the same person. The subsequent links, to Elizabeth Hay are also going to need to be merged.
