Leo was in the United States NAVY, he was on the USS Fitch a Gleaves-class destroyer, that was reclassified and converted to a Highspeed Minesweeper, DMS-25 from at least 1 Feb 1946 to 1 Sep 1948. He served in both World War II and the Korea Wars.

Obituary
Leo L. Hayden 86 of Sand Lake, died Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Spectrum Health ¡V Butterworth Campus. Leo was born September 7, 1927 in Cornell, WI the son of Leslie and Mildred (Jennings) Hayden. He had served in the U.S. Navy in both World War II and Korea. He retired from the City of Grand Rapids Water Department as Supervisor in 1985 after 30 years of service. Surviving are his children, Scott & Cathy Hayden, Gail & Chuck Swanlund, Cindy & Ken Hansen, Eric & Jeri Hayden; 7 grandchildren; brothers, Earl & Shirley Hayden, Nile & Ruth Hayden, Guy & Karen Hayden; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis in 2007 and a daughter, Diane. The family will greet friends Thursday 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs where services will be held Friday 11:00 am. Pastor Herb VanderBilt officiating. Interment with military honors by the U.S. Navy at Pierson Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to East Nelson United Methodist Church.
