Biography

Private 1st Class Richard C. Hayes Sr. served in the United States Army in World War I
Service started: July 1918
Unit(s):
Service ended: September 1919

Richard was born in 1890 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He was the son of Thomas Hayes and Isabel Carbrey

As a young man, he was recruited to try out for the Boston Red Sox. His mother felt professional baseball was not a respectable occupation and refused to allow it. Richard graduated high school from the La Salle Academy in Providence, Rhode Island.[1] (For further info on the school see [11])

He went to work as an agent for the Gulf Refining Company in Springfield, Massachusetts, when he was drafted to serve in the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) during World War I.

“Safe Overseas,” [2]
“Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hayes of 149 West avenue received word this morning of the safe arrival of their son, Richard C. Hayes, Overseas. The young man was formerly agent of the Gulf Refining Company, Springfield, Mass. He is now connected with the typists’ and clerks’ organization of the American expeditionary forces.”

Richard served as Private, later Private First Class in the U.S. Expeditionary Force's Clerks and Typists Corps in Bourges, France, from August 1918 to July 1919. He returned from France with a case of Influenza. Two articles in his home newspaper show how terrifying and rapid the Influenza pandemic could be.

[8 August 1919] “Back from France – Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hayes, 149 West avenue, have received a telegram from their son, Richard C. Hayes, stating that he has arrived safely in New York on the transport Wilhelmina. Priv. Hayes was overseas for 11 months and was attached to the central records office at Bourges, France.”[3]
[15 August 1919] ”Priv. Richard Hayes Ill with Pneumonia”[4]
“Richard Hayes, son of Thomas Hayes of 149 West Avenue, is confined to the army hospital at Camp Merritt, N.J. with tubercular pneumonia. Last Tuesday afternoon a telegram was received by Mr. Hayes informing him that his son had become suddenly ill Tuesday morning.
“A party consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, Miss Katherine Hayes and Katharine Dolan left the city on Tuesday afternoon for Camp Merritt and upon arriving were informed that the soldier was suddenly taken down with pneumonia. His condition today is reported as being a little more favorable, although he is still on the danger list.
“Mr. Hayes should have been discharged last Monday evening, but, due to some misunderstanding, he was held at camp. On Tuesday , he left some of his friends after informing them that he intended to do a little typewriting, and the next thing heard from him an hour later was that he was seriously ill.
“The parents of the young man will remain the Brooklyn until his recovery. Mr. Hayes returned from France on Aug. 6, following one year’s active service in the army.”

After his recuperation, Richard went to work for his brother, Thomas's company in December 1919.[5] As of 1923, he was supervising the company's menhaden fishing plants in Lewes, Delaware.[6][7]

He managed the plant in Delaware during the summer and worked in the firm's New York City office in the off-season. He was eventually made president of the firm, which was later known as Consolidated Fisheries. “By 1938, the Consolidated Fisheries Company of Lewes was the largest processing plant in the United States.”[8]

In 1925, Richard married Anna Haller, who was a bookkeeper in his company.[9] The couple initially lived in Bronx, New York, and later moved to Brooklyn. They had three children:

  1. a daughter who died at birth or was stillborn (1925)
  2. Thomas Francis Hayes (1926-1974)
  3. Richard Charles Hayes, Jr., (1931-1996)

Richard passed away in Brooklyn from complications of Type 2 Diabetes in 1959.

Research Notes

The War Untold [12] profiles a different soldier named Roland Anderson who served with Richard in Bourges and who died of influenza there. This site provides old photographs of the site and details on the unit, the service they provided, and the influenza outbreak there. It is a fascinating glimpse of the little known AEF Central Records Office.
