Canadian census records provide an outline of Ellen's life. She was the eldest child of Thomas and Ellen Hayes and grew up on the farm there in Edwardsburgh Township. Sometime in the 1870s she married Robert Holmes and they lived in Mitchell, Ontario in 1881 and 1891.
In 1911 Ellen was part of Tom and Fanny's household. She sometimes visited her relatives near Prescott and, after her brother Thomas died in 1912, she spent more and more time there.
By 1921 she lived on Edward Street in Prescott with her sister Catherine. At the time of her death, she had lived at her current address in Prescott for 14 years. This is the entry in Tom Loghrin's diary for May 25, 1934, "Fanny got telegram from Prescott; Mrs. Holmes very sick."
She was buried in the Johnstown Cemetery on May 27, 1934.
