Biography

Known as “Jemmy the Butcher”

On Friday, the 14th instant, James Hayes, a butcher residing at Kelso, was fined £2 and costs for furiously driving through the streets of that town. [1]
Furious Riding - Mr James Hayes alias Jemmy the Butcher, is evidently and truly becoming a fast man, as proof of which he some time ago brought one of the fastest horses in the colony, Old Jorrock: but in some way made a bungle in the bargaining by which the horse never came into his possession. A few days ago he was pulled up by a policeman for riding too fast through George Street, in the company of John Hutton, who was killed in the consequence by a fall from his horse, for this serious breach of the law he was bought before the bench who adjudged him guilty - Fined £5.pounds & 13/- costs.[2]
Cruelty to animals- James Hayes, the Butcher, appeared befor their worships On Monday last to answer a charge of ill treating a horse, which was presented by the chief Constable,, Who deposed, That he saw him strike the animal 5 or 6 blows between the ears with a broomstick in William Street. The bench found him guilty, and sentenced him to pay a fine of 40s. and costs.[3]

Government Gazette-16-12-1856 - Insolvency- James Hayes, Havanna Street, Butcher..

Government Gazette- 10-6-1863 - Insolvency- James Hayes, Bathurst, Butcher...

MASTER AND SERVANT'S ACT. — Mr. James Hayes, Butcher, living in William-street, appeared before the Police Magistrate, Saul Samuel Esq., J P., and Edward Templar Esq., J .P., to answer the complaint of Edward Young, who stated that on the Friday morning previous, Mr. Hayes with whom he was hired as a butcher, gave him orders to chop up wood for the house, a duty which was "not in the bond," and on his refusal, summarily discharged him, desiring at the same time Mrs. Hayes to pay him half a week's wages. Now as complainant was hired at £3 per week, he maintained it was clear that on Friday more than half a week's wages were due to him ; he therefore prayed their worships to adjudge him his "rights." Mr. Hayes on his part shewed that through the inattention and carelessness of Young, his cart had been broken, and an expence of 15 shillings incurred ; and that he (Young) had several times misconducted himself to the injury of Mr. Hayes' business. The bench ultimately decided that complainant had a claim of one pound against the defendant, the former thus losing ten shillings by his litigious disposition.[4]
Mr. James Hayes, butcher, met with an accident ...  ; he was standing by the fence, alongside one of his favourite horses, when the animal suddenly turning round, crushed our friend Jemmy rather too hardly against the fence, and by the pressure his elbow was dislocated. The Doctor succeeded in getting the bone into its right place again, at the cost of no small amount of pain on Jemmy's part, who expressed his disapproval of suffering in loud and unmeasured terms.[5]

He passed away at Bathurst in 1883.[6]
