Biography

The son of President Rutherford B. and Lucy (Webb) Hayes, Scott was born February 8, 1871, in Columbus, Ohio. He spent his early years growing up and being educated in the White House since he was only 6 years old when his father became the US President. Like his sister Fanny, he attended the Fremont schools after his father left the presidential office and returned home to Ohio. Scott went on to Green Springs Academy of the Western Reserve University, and the Scott Manual Training School of Toledo before he enrolled in 1890 at Cornell University.

After finishing school, he worked for various businesses including the First National Bank of Fremont, the Thompson-Houston Electric Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, the General Electric Company (previously the Thompson-Houston Electric Company), the firm of Hayes & Arthur in Cleveland, the Scott Spring Company, Cleveland, Ohio, served as general sales agent and vice president of the Railway Steel Springs Company, and finally become assistant to the president of the New York Air Brake Company and later became vice president of that company.

Scott married Maude Wright Anderson on September 9, 1912 at Westchester, New York. They lived at Croton Dam, in Westchester County, New York. Scott and his wife were frequent visitors at his parents home in Spiegel Grove for numerous occasions and celebrations. After what was supposed to have been a business trip through Central and South America and became a rescuing not once but two times, Scott and his wife returned home to New York. Scott suffered from a brain tumor and died May 6, 1923, at the age of 52. He is buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Fremont, Ohio.
