Biography

Frank was born in 1834 in Knob Noster, Johnson, Missouri.

He married Louisa C. Edwards in 1854 when he was 20 and she was 17. They had at least five children, all born in Missouri. Betsy was born in 1855, then William in 1858.

There is uncertainty regarding their daughters. The censuses list the following:

1860: Elizabeth 5
1870: Emily 9
1880: Betsy 24 and Emma 18

It appears Elizabeth/Betsy was not present at the 1860 census, when she would have been 15, and that Emily, born around 1861, is later referred to as Emma. Because there are records of this family living near other family members, it is possible Elizabeth/Nancy was staying in a different home in 1870. (More research is needed; much of the research relied on here was conducted by a previous WikiTree genealogist so current genealogist has not seen these records first hand which might clear up some of this confusion).

The 1860 census lists the family under the last name Franklin rather than Hayes in Washington Township, Johnson, Missouri:

Jefferson Franklin M 24 Missouri
Louisa Franklin F 20 Missouri
Elizabeth Franklin F 5 Missouri
Wm H Franklin M 2 Missouri
Henry F Franklin M 1 Missouri

Around 1961, their daughter Emma or Emily was born.

Civil War

In 1862, at 28, Frank enlisted in the Co B 27th Missouri Infantry Mounted and fought in the civil war. He was mustered in 1865.

A previous genealogist noted:

Along with George T. Hayes were "3 cousins that joined the 27th also from Johnson County, Warrensburg. They would be Harry (Harvey Nephew of Henry -Johnson-Jefferson- Zachariah HAYES, sons of Henry and Jane Hayes."

Around that time, two more sons were born: John Wallace and James Sherman.

The 1870 census shows Frank and family in Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri:

Franklin Hays M 36 Missouri farmer
Louisa Hays F 34 Missouri
Nancy Hays F 15 Missouri
William Hays M 12 Missouri
Emily Hays F 9 Missouri
John Hays M 6 Missouri

Living next door are father Henry/Sallie/ an 11 year old Henry DeArmond, son of his daughter, Nancy Amanda. And then Zachariah/Josephine and kids/ then Johnson/Sallie and 2 daughters.

The 1880 census shows Frank as a farmer living in Montserrat, Johnson County, Missouri:

Franklin Hayes Self M 47 Missouri, United States
Lucy Hayes Wife F 42 Missouri, United States
Betsy Hayes Daughter F 24 Missouri, United States
Emma Hayes Daughter F 18 Missouri, United States
John Hayes Son M 16 Missouri, United States
James Hayes Son M 9 Missouri, United States

Their son William, 22, is listed as living next door with his wife Mary (no kids). The third farm down on the page is Frank's brother Zack T. Hayes and wife Josephine. On the next page of the census, Harvey (possibly a cousin?) and Elizabeth and three kids are listed.

Death

Frank died in Walla Walla, Washington, in 1896. He is buried in Foster Cemetery in Prescott, Washington. A photo of his headstone is found [1]

As the 1890 census is NOT any more it is hard to say when they moved to Washington State, where they both died Louiza first on Oct. 16, 1895 and then just 104 days later Jefferson Franklin passed.
A note on Zachariah's f-a-g memorial say HE moved to Washington in 1889 and then back to Montserrat MO by 1900.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jefferson by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jefferson:
