Jonathan while serving in the British Army he met Elizabeth Elliott whom he desired to marry. Her parents being Quakers and opposed to war would not give their consent, but after a time he sold his commission, left the army and married Miss Elliott and lived a high life with the British officers. Jonathan Hayes and Peter Elliott are among the Owners of Land Chester County, Pennsylvania shown on "A Map of Ye Improved Part of Pennsylvania Divided into Counties, Townships and Lotts" surveyed by Thomas Holmes and published by Jno. Harris in 1687. Holmes accompanied William Penn to the Colony in 1681 to lay out the city of Philadelphia. After spending all of his money, his father-in-law refused to do more for him. He and his wife went into Deleware, located on a large tract of land and settled down to farming. They had twelve sons all living to manhood and all scattered to the four winds.
