Biography

John was born 21 March 1857 [1].

John Hayes was thirty-seven years old when he married Laura Looser on 14 October 1894 in Chambers County. She was fifteen years old. [2], [3]

Their first daughter, Luta Keron Hayes was born in August 1895. A second, un-named daughter was born and died on April 22, 1887 and was buried at the Bibby Family Cemetery in Chambers County, Alabama. [4] Willam Nonis Looser was born on 25 August 1898 in Daviston, Tallapoosa County, Alabama.

In the 1900 U. S. Census (9 June 1900) [5] the family lived in Milltown, Chambers County, Alabama. John was a farmer on a farm owned free of a mortgage. He was forty-three years old and had two children. Also in the family was his mother, seventy-four year old Lucy S. Hayes (Hayse) and Laura's younger sister Susie Ellen Looser who was eighteen.

John Lawton Hayes was born February 8, 1901. Mary J. Hayes was born about 1904. Hugh Carlton Hayes was born on May 3, 1906. Joseph Frasier Looser was born about 1909.

In the 1910 U. S. Census (19 May 1910), [6] the family lived in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. John was still farming and owned his farm but it now shows that he had a mortgage. They had been married fifteen years and had six living children as indicated above.

Fred Clark Hayes was born April 28, 1912. Lucille Webster Hayes was born April 25, 1915. Sherrad Clyde Hayes was born May 30, 1917.

In the U. S. Census (January 9, 1920), [7] the family was still in Daviston, Tallapoosa County near Daviston and Germany Ferry Roads. The surname in this record is spelled Hays. John A. Hays was listed as age 62 and the home was owned with a mortgage. He was a farmer working on his own account doing general farming. She was forty-two years old. The two older children were married and gone from the home. William's family was in the next listing and he was listed as a farmer working on rented land. It seems probable that he and his father were working together. The children at home were John L. age 18, Mary I. age 16, Hugh C. age 13, Joe F. age 10. Fred C. age 7, Webster L. age 4 and Clyde S age two. All but the youngest two were attending school and no other occupation was given.

John died on May 2, 1927 in Daviston. [8] He was buried the following day at Darian Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Daviston. [9]
