Marriage to Margaret Hoy (1849–1924) 24 November 1870, at the St Mary Roman Catholic church at Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Their marriage certificate tells us that James Hayes (bachelor) and Margaret Hoy (spinster) were both servants of Newcastle. Unfortunately their parents' names were not listed. Witnesses were Henry Chapman and Mary Ann Barrett.[1]
Death James died 1 June 1905 at Vulcan Street Carrington. His death certificate has the following information: James Hayes, farmer, age 58, cause of death Carcinoma abdominal, birth at Newcastle, father James Hayes, storekeeper (mother's name not recorded). Marriage to Margaret Hoy. Children; HENRY J. 36, ANNIE 34, MARY E. 28, JAMES R. 26, EDMUND 22, ALPHONSUS H. 19, ALBERT A. 17, VERONICA 15, LIVING, 1 MALE 1 FEMALE DECEASED.[2]
Obituary
Death of Mr. James Hayes, Glendon Brook
Mr. James Hayes, of Glendon Brook; died on June 1, at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Martin Jordon, Victoria-street, Carrington, Newcastle. Deceased, who was in his fifty-eighth year, had worked at the Cockle Creek Smelting Works since they first began operations. A few months ago he retired, and being in indifferent health, he went to Newcastle for medical attendance. During his illness the late Mr, Hayes was attended by the Rev. Fathers J. O'Gorman (Adm.) and F. O'Reilly. He was fortified by the last rites of Holy Church. The remains wore interred in the Sandgate Cemetery, the Rev. Father O'Reilly officiating at the grave. The funeral was a lengthy one, many of those present being fellow-workmen and friends from Cockle Creek. Deceased leaves a widow, five sons and three daughters to mourn their loss. Mr. Harry Hayes (one of the sons) is at present at Coolgardie.[3]
