Biography

Lucy Gordon was born on 13 July 1783 in Halifax County, North Carolina, the daughter of John Gordon and his wife Nancy/Ann Haynes[1]

Lucy married Robert Smith on 1 March 1803,[2] probably in Smith County, Tennessee, where her brother John Gordon settled. An article on Smith County history describing John's settlement of Gordonsville also mentioned his sister Lucy's marriage to Robert Smith:[3]

"John Gordon came to the Caney Fork around 1800 and settled on the present site of Gordonsville. He built a cabin and brought his family to the county in 1801. Under Gordon’s leadership and with its proximity to the river and the Trousdale Ferry Pike, and later, the railroad, Gordonsville became the largest town on the south side of the Cumberland River. . .
Gordon’s nearest neighbor on the east was Thomas Smith, Sr. who settled on the west side of the Caney Fork near the mouth of Hickman Creek. Smith came from North Carolina in 1799-1800. His five sons were John, William, Jesse, Thomas, and Robert. William settled on Mulherrin Creek where New Middleton is now located. His son, Josiah R., was a Methodist preacher and a soldier in the War of 1812. Jesse married a daughter of William Trousdale who also settled on the Caney Fork. Robert Smith married Lucy Gordon, sister of John Gordon. John and Thomas, Jr. both became Methodist ministers."

Lucy died on 5 January 1858[4] and was buried in Prairie Church Cemetery, Higginsville, Lafayette County, Missouri.[5]
