Biography

William Haynes (aka Haines,) was born in 1624 In Renhold, Bedfordshire, England, the All Saints parish register of births lists Robert and William Haines born June 6 1624, to Walter Haines and Mary Watford. ^[1]

Walter and Mary (Watford) Haines died 1632/33. Sons Richard and William emigrated to Massachusetts in 1634 settled in Salem with Ingersoll and Houlton families. Married Circa 1644 in Salem, MA to Sarah Ingersoll and had son Jonathan.^[2]Link no longer working

He arrived in Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony on 18 Sep 1634 aboard the ship Griffin. Richard Haynes, his brother, was on the ship with him. ^[3]

Husbandman, Salem, 1644; admitted to church, 14:9m:1647; gave a letter of attorney, 25:9m:1647 to Thomas Haynes, merchant, London, for collection at Danes Halle, Bedfordshire; with Richard Haines of Salem sold their 2/3rds part of a farm in Salem, 29:4m:1648.^[4]

He died in Salem, Massachusetts 1651.^[5]

Savage includes Jonathan and Sarah in the list of children of James Haynes; their parentage is not stated in the church record. A Sara Haynes married at Salem [VR 3:457], 9:7m:1671, Moses Ebborn [Aborn]. Since she was definitely the daughter of William Haynes, and since the deeds in which children of Jonathan Haynes participated prove that Jonathan was son of William, it is a reasonable inference that the 1648 baptism pertains to these two children of William Haynes.

The following is the biography from FindAGrave ^[8] William Haines arrived at Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony on 18 September 1634 on board the ship Griffin.[3][5[

Richard Haines, his older brother, was on the ship with him. They both settled at Salem Town, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[3][5]

Prior to July 1644, William Haines purchased jointly with Richard Ingersoll, from John Pease, the Weston Grant, and jointly with Richard Haines a portion of the Townsend Bishop Grant of 540 acres in the northern end of the Salem Town boundary territory.[3]

These interior land areas subsequently became known as Salem Farms, Salem Village and is presently Danvers, Massachusetts. It was a short distance of approximately four miles from Salem (Town).[3]

William Haines married Sarah INGERSOLL before July 1644 in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony. She was the daughter of Richard Ingersoll, his partner in the Weston Grant purchase. This was evidenced by the will of Richard Ingersoll written 21 July 1644.[18]

At a General Town Meeting on 7 July 1644 William Haines was appointed, along with several other inhabitants of Salem, to patrol the settlement each Sabbath Day. Each patrol consisting of two men, were instructed to take note of Sabbath breakers and report their names to the authorities.[2][3]

William Haines died after 14 Nov 1649 and was buried before 13 November 1651 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony. {S2}.

William Haines' name is listed as a full communicant of the First Church of Salem in 1647-1648 and his wife, Sarah Ingersoll, was listed in April 1648. Sometime after the initial entry date, and in a different handwriting, the word "dead" was inserted following William's name.[3][5]

"William Haynes was a person of means; and the manner in which he is uniformly spoken of proves that he was regarded with singular respect and esteem. He died about 1650, and his son Thomas became subsequently a leading man of the Village."[4]

It is believed he died in the early part of 1651, or if it occurred before March 25th, according to the old calendar, in the later part of the year 1650.[5]
